Chapter 15
Jocelyn willed her hand to move at a normal pace as she lifted a fork and placed the last bite of eggs into her mouth. Though Father didnât know it yet, immediately after breakfast she was going to see him in his study. After speaking with Felix yesterdayâafter kissing Felix yesterdayâJocelyn was determined to not let time slip by, even if she didnât yet feel up to the task at hand.
But never mind that. Sheâd never shirked a difficult conversation before, and she wasnât going to now. Sheâd given herself one day, yesterday, to figure out the best method to broach the subject. Jocelyn rested her fork near her half-empty plate. First off, Father was usually in better humor in the mornings before he read the daily paper and got bogged down with the news of the day. Second, she wasnât above buttering him up a bit; sheâd learned as a young girl that a kiss on the cheek could go a long way to getting what she wanted. Lastly, when it all came down to it, Father appreciated bluntness. She would lay it out honestly, and succinctly. No beating about the bush. No hinting or implying.
She and Felix had formed a connection, one that they were both eager to pursue further. To that purpose, Felix wished to call on her some morning and they both wished for Fatherâs blessing in that.
Oh, gracious, but just thinking of saying so much to Father made her stomach roll. Jocelyn placed a hand against her waist. Perhaps she should have skipped breakfast this morning. Well, there was no point waiting any longer. Father would be in his study by now and if she didnât hurry, sheâd be competing with his morning paper and that would only complicate things.
She would speak with Father and then hurry over to the hot house and see if Felix was still there. Sheâd no doubt heâd be waiting for her this morning, but she wanted to speak with Father before seeing him again.
Standing, Jocelyn kept her chin up and a calm smile pasted on her lips. The lips Felix had kissed. The memory, each and every time, brought with it the same rush sheâd felt in the moment. Jocelyn hadnât thought much about kissing Felix before then, yet, when his lips had met hers, sheâd known she wanted it. Sheâd wanted the kiss to keep going, wanted it to deepen and last.
The study door had never looked so big before.
Jocelynâs brow dropped. She was being ridiculous. Felix was an upstanding man. He was well respected and had always been nothing short of a gentleman to her. Above all, she cared for him, most deeply. Surely Father wouldnât let politics ruin this for her.
Would he?
Either way, she was about to find out. Jocelyn rapped lightly on the door.
âEnter.â
Father sounded distracted. What was he busy with this morning? If someone in Parliament was causing a row and setting her father on edge, that wouldnât help her cause any. Jocelyn opened the door and stepped inside.
